چکیده

in this study, the biological effects of sugar beet leaf saponins on spotted alfalfa aphid was evaluated using thin layer chromatography. after saponin extraction from the leaf, three saponin concentrations together with a diet lacking saponin (control) were fed to aphids in five replications. the aphids’ survival and fertility were evaluated and analysed. results not only showed fertility impairment of aphids but also confirmed leaf saponin toxicity for aphids in one mg.ml-1 saponin. however, low saponin concentrations had a probiotic effect on aphid nymph production. medium concentrations also decreased aphid fertility up to 50% compared with control. chromatography results showed the expression of two dense spots of leaf triterpenoid saponin on tlc plate. it can be concluded that saponin compounds of sugar beet leaf contain biological effects. therefore, sugar beet leaf saponins can be used for pest management and increasing the plant tolerance through selection and breeding. they could also be used as biological herbicide and even as medicine after further special experiments.

Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.).

Creating transgenic plants is invaluable for the genetic analysis of sugar beet and will be increasingly important as sugar beet genomic technologies progress. A protocol for Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of sugar beet is described in this chapter. Our protocol is optimized for a sugar beet genotype that performs exceptionally well in tissue culture, including the steps of dedifferentia...

A morphogenetic crop model for sugar-beet (Beta vulgaris L.)

This paper is the instructions for the proceeding of the International Symposium on Crop. Sugar beet crop models have rarely taken into account the morphogenetic process generating plant architecture despite the fact that plant architectural plasticity plays a key role during growth, especially under stress conditions. The objective of this paper is to develop this approach by applying the Gree...

Effects of zinc toxicity on sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) plants grown in hydroponics.

The effects of high Zn concentration were investigated in sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) plants grown in a controlled environment in hydroponics. High concentrations of Zn sulphate in the nutrient solution (50, 100 and 300 microm) decreased root and shoot fresh and dry mass, and increased root/shoot ratios, when compared to control conditions (1.2 microm Zn). Plants grown with excess Zn had inwa...

Characterization and genetic dissection of resistance to spotted alfalfa aphid (Therioaphis trifolii) in Medicago truncatula

Aphids cause significant yield losses in agricultural crops worldwide. Medicago truncatula, a model legume, cultivated pasture species in Australia and close relative of alfalfa (Medicago sativa), was used to study the defence response against Therioaphis trifolii f. maculate [spotted alfalfa aphid (SAA)]. Aphid performance and plant damage were compared among three accessions. A20 is highly su...

Effects ofpollinator line characteristics on quantity and quality of monogerm hybrid seed production in sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.)

A two-year experiment was carried out to study the effects of pollinator line characteristicson the quantity and quality of monogerm hybrid seed production in sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.)and select proper pollinator for five promising sugar beet cytoplasmic male sterile lines (CMSs)during 2012-2013 growing seasons. In this study, four diploid pollinator lines were crossed byfive CMSs of sugar ...

Plant Regeneration from Unfertilized Ovaries of Sugar Beet (Beta vulgaris L.) Cultured In Vitro

233 Abstract: A. method is described for plant regeneration from unfertilized ovaries isolated from a diploid male sterile sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) breeding line that was developed at the Sugar Institute, Ankara, Turkey. Ovary explants were cultured on Murashige & Skoog (MS) medium containing 2.0 mg/l benzylaminopurine (BAP). Two treatments were tested by incubating all of the explants in ...
